The first of four workshops on democratic participation

News

The first of four workshops on the democratic participation of residents of foreign origin will be held at the Innovation Centre next Saturday.

A workshop that fosters democratic awareness

Nearly twenty people have already signed up for the first workshop on the democratic participation of residents of foreign origin. More are expected, as there is a lot of interest.

The workshop will be held next Saturday, 7th February, from 10 am to 5 pm at the Innovation Centre by the Stream. It will cover the rights of every individual, the role of local councils, local council elections, and how everyone can take part in democracy in Iceland. The workshop is free of charge.

„We want to promote the democratic participation of immigrants in Hafnarfjörður. This is a large group that can have an impact if they know their rights and understand how society works,“ says Hildur Ýr Jónsdóttir, project manager for multicultural affairs at Hafnarfjörður municipality. Political scientist Magnea Marinósdóttir will lead the workshop.

„Next Saturday is the first day. But we're teaching four times,“ says Hildur, encouraging Hafnfirðingar to nudge neighbours of foreign origin and let them know. „Communities work best when we all take part.“

It's a good idea to register here. All welcome.
