COVID-19: General gathering restrictions tightened at midnight
General gathering limits will be 10 people, the allowance for a larger number of people at events with rapid tests will be removed, the maximum number in shops will be 200 people, and entertainment venues, pubs and casinos will be closed. These are the main points of the tightened public health measures decided by the Minister of Health, based on the recommendations of the Chief Medical Officer. The current restrictions on school activities will remain unchanged. The regulation on stricter domestic public health measures will be in effect from Saturday, 15 January until 2 February.
Stricter measures are being taken in light of current forecasts of an increase in Covid-19 infections and hospital admissions in the coming weeks, and the significant and growing pressure on the healthcare system, particularly at Landspítali. At the same time, targeted efforts are being made to strengthen the National University Hospital and increase its capacity to cope with heavy pressure.
