New sports hall revolutionises Haukar's sporting life
Haukar's brand-new sports hall was inaugurated today, 14 February. The building's contractor, ÍAV, formally handed the structure over to the town, and an operating agreement was signed between Haukar and the City of Hafnarfjörður. The building, which is just over 11,000 square metres in size, was consecrated by the priest, Arnór Bjarki Blomsterberg.
„This is a milestone that we celebrate,“ says Valdimar Víðisson, the mayor of Hafnarfjörður.
„This building is of immense importance to the town's sporting life and to all Hafnfirðingar. Hafnarfjörður is a sporting town, and this magnificent building is a testament to our ambition when it comes to developing sports facilities. Sport is the best form of prevention, and a building like this attracts more participants, young and old,“ says the mayor. „Haukar and all Hafnarfjörður residents, my warmest congratulations on the building. I am proud of this development in our town.“
The sports hall is a magnificent building.
Magnús Gunnarsson, chairman of Haukar, welcomes the new building. „We have been waiting a long time for better facilities and this new football building is a complete revolution for the football section, as well as our entire club. It's night and day compared to what we have now. It's a magnificent building.“
Magnús says that although the building is curved, large and substantial, it is a thing of beauty. „There is a great deal of glass in the building. We therefore capture nature, and people feel at ease here. The building provides a great sense of enclosure, and I'm convinced that players and spectators alike will enjoy many happy moments here, as this is one of the most magnificent sports halls in the country,“ says Magnús, adding that the building is not just for footballers.
„There are tartan tracks here that run around the football pitch itself. We're thinking of this for senior citizens and other groups, who can then use the facility in the mornings. We will look into how best to meet requests for the use of the facility.“
The groundbreaking in 2021
The sports hall has risen quickly. Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, former mayor, took the first spadeful for this new sports hall for Haukar on Monday, 12 April 2021, on the football club's 90th anniversary. The final beam was then put in place at the end of February last year.
Haukar say that with the arrival of this magnificent sports hall, a dream will come true. The hall will completely transform their facilities. It is expected to be in full use shortly.
Come on Haukar!
