Free mulch for you!

Yes, we, the residents of Hafnarfjörður, have done an excellent job of sorting our food waste and can therefore enjoy the results by receiving compost from GAJU, SORPA's gasification and anaerobic digestion plant, free of charge. The compost will be available from tomorrow at the plot site in Víðistaðir and at the Breiðhellu recycling centre. The compost on offer is from the first harvest, but last year, residents of the capital region sorted around 10,500 tonnes of organic waste. Compost is a powerful and wholesome soil conditioner that nourishes the soil. It is different from soil in that it does not contain any inorganic materials, such as sand or gravel.

The cycle starts in the kitchen

As SORPA states, GAJA compost is intended for outdoor use. It is well-suited for use on fields, plots, urban green spaces, flowerbeds and vegetable gardens. The compost is strong and direct contact with the roots of plants is not advisable. GAJA compost is produced in accordance with a permit from the Food Safety Authority and is registered as an organic fertiliser. Yes, the cycle starts in the kitchen. Those of you who live further afield in the capital region can also collect compost from other locations. It is available at the SORPA recycling centres at Breiðhellu, Sævarhöfði and Ánanaust.
Thank you for sorting food waste. It's truly worth it!
