Glorious 4th-grade celebrations

The Little Reading Competition is five years old in Hafnarfjörður, but now the finals are being held for Year 4 pupils in primary schools.

April is the time when spring greets us, and it is safe to say that for the younger pupils in the primary schools, the first signs of spring appear at the finals of the Little Reading Competition.  Each morning, classrooms and halls in the primary schools fill up with enthusiastic parents and other well-wishers, who have gathered to listen to Year 4 pupils recite texts and poems and play musical instruments with artistry.  These are harvest festivals, as the project begins annually on the Day of the Icelandic Language in November, at the same time as the Grand Reading Competition for Year 7 is formally launched, a project which concluded in March.

The finals of the Little Speech Competition in Hafnarfjörður are being held for the 15th time this spring. The project began five years ago and is slowly and quietly spreading across the country, with 60 schools taking part this year.
