House Preservation Fund – grants for the maintenance and renovation of older houses

The City of Hafnarfjörður is inviting applications for grants from the Hafnarfjörður Building Preservation Fund. The fund's purpose is to promote the preservation and maintenance of older buildings in Hafnarfjörður, and it provides grants for maintenance and renovation. The fund is also authorised to provide grants for the maintenance and preservation of other structures in the town of cultural, scientific or artistic value, provided that the works are in accordance with the building's original architectural style and the principles of conservation.

The application deadline is 28 February 2024.

Application forms are available on My Pages at hafnarfjordur.is under: Applications | Other applications | Hafnarfjörður House Preservation Fund. Applications must be accompanied by detailed information on the proposed works and costs.

Assessment of applications

The Culture and Tourism Committee of Hafnarfjörður awards grants from the house preservation fund, following a report from the Hafnarfjörður Folk Museum. Applications are assessed in terms of their preservation value, for example, due to architecture, cultural history, setting, authenticity and technical condition, as well as their value for the preservation of Hafnarfjörður's architectural heritage. Priority will be given to funding works that restore the external appearance of buildings, such as windows and cladding, to its original state. Applications for works that constitute routine maintenance are generally not eligible for a grant.

Further information about the fund can be found in Regulations of the Hafnarfjörður Building Preservation Fund
