Grants from the Fridrik and Gudlaug Fund awarded

News

Three projects were today awarded a grant from the Friðrik Bjarnason and Guðlaug Pétursdóttir Fund, and the grants were presented in a light-hearted ceremony at Hafnarfjörður Library at the couple's piano in the library's music department. The projects have in common that they promote and strengthen the town's musical life, and particularly the singing community, just as the fund's regulations stipulate. Grants are awarded on Friðrik's birthday, 27 November, each year.

The couple gave the City of Hafnarfjörður almost all of their possessions before they died, and a fund was established from their gift to support and promote choral life in Hafnarfjörður. Applications for the fund are invited annually. Hafnarfjörður Music School Symphony Orchestra  Received a grant of kr. 300,000 for the council's study trip to Catalonia.. The Barbara Choir in Hafnarfjörður received a grant of kr. 200,000 to premiere a new mass by Auður Guðjohnsen, which will be dedicated to the choir, and Andrés Thor received a grant of kr. 200,000 for the project Síðdegistónar in Hafnarborg.

A fund to enhance the musical life of Hafnarfjörður

In a will from 1960, the couple Friðrik Bjarnason and Guðlaug Pétursdóttir bequeathed a large part of their assets to the City of Hafnarfjörður and stipulated that books and items should be preserved in the library and that a fund should be established to “to promote the musical life of Hafnarfjörður in whatever way is considered best at the time, with particular emphasis on promoting choral singing in the town“, and „to support students of music and music scholars“. Their principal song, by the organist and composer Friðrik Bjarnaason and his wife Guðlaug Pétursdóttir, is our local anthem for Hafnarfjörður: „Thou fair Hafnarfjörður“.
