The City of Hafnarfjörður and the Port of Hafnarfjörður recently received the Green Light from Orkusalan, which confirms and certifies that the municipality and the port use 100% renewable electricity in their operations with origin guarantees in accordance with an international standard. This step and this certification are part of the municipality's green journey.
One of the stated aims of the City of Hafnarfjörður is to be at the forefront of sustainability and environmental matters, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the generation of waste. The municipality has taken environmental matters seriously and has, among other things, set itself the goal of significantly reducing pollution and waste generation through responsible procurement, consumption, and increased recycling. As such, this certification is another step towards the municipality's green future. Recently, the City of Hafnarfjörður joined Grænni Byggð and simultaneously announced that environmentally certified development on purchased plots in Hafnarfjörður will provide a discount of up to 30% off the plot price. In June, the municipality then signed an agreement with Kolvið on carbon offsetting for its operations, which involved planting 8,900 trees for the 2018 financial year. „It is a great honour to receive the Green Light from the Energy Supplier, and it is another rose in the buttonhole of the council's green journey. We continue to take purposeful and confident steps towards a brighter and even greener future. We are a large municipality and bear a great responsibility in environmental and climate matters.“ says Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, Mayor of Hafnarfjörður.
What is a green light?
The energy supplier makes it possible for all its customers to receive the so-called Green Light, where all electricity sales are certified 100% renewable with origin guarantees in accordance with an international standard. The purpose of the origin guarantee scheme is to increase the share of renewable energy in Europe, and the guarantees are used to meet the requirements of numerous international environmental labels.
