Grief education for nursery and primary school staff

News

In recent weeks and months, the Bereavement Centre has been visiting staff at Hafnarfjörður's primary schools, providing education on the grief and bereavement reactions of children and young people. Visits to staff at nurseries are planned for the future. Representatives from the Bereavement Centre share their own experiences during the training, providing staff with advice and tools that can help improve the well-being of both bereaved children and the staff themselves, who must both cope with their own grief and support those who are grieving. A visit from the Bereavement Centre is designed to empower staff and boost their confidence when supporting a pupil in mourning.

Karólína Helga Símonardóttir, Chair of the Board of the Bereavement Centre, and Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, Mayor of Hafnarfjörður, yesterday, on Wednesday, 11 May 2022, signed a new lease agreement between the City of Hafnarfjörður and the Bereavement Centre. The City of Hafnarfjörður has been an important supporter of the organisation.

It's about regaining faith in the future after a loss

The bereavement education programme is a joint project between the City of Hafnarfjörður and the Bereavement Centre, concerning responses to grief and, perhaps just as importantly, the support and resources available when grief strikes. No one goes through life without experiencing grief, which can take many different forms. Good and constructive grief work has a significant impact on one's well-being and helps to regain faith in the future after the loss of a loved one. The school community in Hafnarfjörður is large and includes all the town's neighbourhoods: staff, pupils and families. This community project is part of the health promotion for the residents and staff of the City of Hafnarfjörður, and a token of gratitude from the Bereavement Centre for the goodwill and support of the city.

The team behind the Bereavement Centre is a strong one. Here you can see the organisation's Executive Director and Chair of the Board, together with staff and other board members, at the official opening of the organisation's new premises on the 4th floor of the St. Jó's Wellbeing Centre.  The Bereavement Centre has been based on the 2nd floor of the Life Quality Centre since the centre opened in the autumn of 2019. The organisation has now moved to larger premises and can offer all its counselling and services to bereaved people in its own space.

Association of grassroots organisations in the field of grief counselling

The Bereavement Centre is open to all and its main aim is to support bereaved people and all those who work for their well-being. Its activities are primarily concerned with support, counselling, information services and education. The Bereavement Centre is one of the more than twenty organisations and companies located in St. Jó's Quality of Life Centre and has been since the wellbeing centre opened in 2019. The Bereavement Centre is a collaborative project between Ný dögun, Ljónshjarta and Gleym mér ei, all of which are grassroots organisations in the field of bereavement support. Grief counselling aims to improve public health by promoting and supporting people's spiritual, physical and social well-being following the loss of a loved one. The Grief Centre supports a large number of people annually by offering a wide range of services.
