Guðrún Brá and Róbert Ísak are the Athletes of Hafnarfjörður 2021

The selection of Hafnarfjörður's Sportswoman, Sportsman and Sports Team took place online on the Borough of Hafnarfjörður's channels today. Hafnarfjörður's 2021 Team of Excellence is the women's first team in basketball at the Haukar sports club. Golfer Guðrún Brá Björgvinsdóttir from Golfklúbburinn Keili is Hafnarfjörður's female athlete, and swimmer Róbert Ísak Jónsson from Íþróttafélagið Fjörður is Hafnarfjörður's male athlete.

300 individuals from Hafnarfjörður have won titles this year.

Every year, the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður organises an awards ceremony for sportspeople who compete for teams from Hafnarfjörður, Champions of Iceland, cup-winning teams, Nordic champions, world champions and special achievements, along with the selection of Hafnarfjörður's sportswoman, sportsman and sports team. A virtual ceremony was held on the City of Hafnarfjörður's channels today. In 2021, around 300 individuals have won national and/or cup championship titles with Hafnarfjörður teams, and they are especially congratulated on their achievements. At the ceremony, 8 million was allocated from a fund established by Rio Tinto in Iceland, ÍBH and the City of Hafnarfjörður, which is intended to support sports activities for under-18s.

A unique performance in Icelandic sporting history by the Hafnarfjörður elite team in 2021

The women's senior basketball team at Haukar managed to finish second in the Icelandic Championship, became the cup champions and the champions of champions in the autumn. The team also won the first European game an Icelandic women's team has won this autumn, when they beat the Portuguese team Union Sportiva in the EuroCup preliminary round. Haukar won the two-legged aggregate tie against the Portuguese side and progressed to the group stage of the European competition. This performance puts Haukar at the forefront of Icelandic women's basketball, and the achievement is a unique one in the history of Icelandic sport.

Guðrún Brá Björgvinsdóttir is the Athlete of Hafnarfjörður 2021

Guðrún Brá is one of the country's leading golfers and has been for many years. She is the 2021 female golfer for the Golf Association of Iceland and Keilir. During the year, she became the Women's Matchplay Champion of Iceland and won the B59 tournament on the top players' tour. Guðrún Brá is a professional golfer who plays on the Ladies European Tour, where she had full status for the year. She competed in sixteen tournaments this year and earned qualification for the season finale on the European Tour in Spain last November. Her best result this year was 12th place at the Aramco event in England in July and 8th place at the ATS in Saudi Arabia in November. Guðrún Brá finished 75th on the LET European Tour Order of Merit and is ranked 649th on the women's professional golf world ranking. Guðrún Brá retains full status on the LET Tour for 2022, which begins in February. She is the fourth Icelandic woman to have earned a tour card.

Róbert Ísak Jónsson is the Athlete of Hafnarfjörður 2021

Swimmer Róbert Ísak Fjarðar is the 2021 sportsman of Hafnarfjörður and the Disabled Sports Federation. He is a four-time Icelandic champion in the 25m pool in the S14 category and a three-time Icelandic champion in the 50m pool. He also set numerous Icelandic records during the year. He won a silver medal in the 100m butterfly and a bronze medal in the 200m individual medley at the European Championships in Madeira. At the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, which took place in 2021, he finished 6th in the 100m butterfly and the 200m individual medley.
