Greener Neighbourhood is a collaborative platform for companies, institutions and local authorities that wish to promote sustainability in the built environment and environmentally friendly priorities in development. The City of Hafnarfjörður recently took the lead among Icelandic municipalities and is offering plots at a discount of up to 30%, provided that the development on the plots is environmentally certified.

A progressive initiative that will hopefully encourage more local authorities to take action on environmental issues.

The municipality has approved seven proposals for measures intended to encourage housebuilders to prioritise the environment, in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, stricter requirements for lower greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere and increased public environmental awareness. Subsequently, the City of Hafnarfjörður has decided to join the rapidly growing membership of Green Region, with the aim of continuing to contribute to the balance of sustainable development.
