A group of people who are the backbone of our strong sporting life in Hafnarfjörður yesterday celebrated the 80th anniversary of ÍBH, the Hafnarfjörður Sports Association. The association was founded on 28 April 1945.

A group of people who are the backbone of our strong sporting life in Hafnarfjörður yesterday celebrated the 80th anniversary of ÍBH, the Hafnarfjörður Sports Association. The association was founded on 28 April 1945.
Valdimar Víðisson, the mayor, congratulated the club. He met with the sports representative, the sports and leisure committee, the board of ÍBH, and a representative of ÍSÍ and UMFÍ. Also the former sports representative, Ingvar Jónsson, and Elísabet Ólafsdóttir, the executive director of ÍBH.
The sporting life changed a lot
Elísabet says that Ingvar played a major part in sports facilities being built one after another here in Hafnarfjörður. „It was really great that he could be with us,“ says Elísabet, who has been the club's managing director since 2008. „Yes, I've been in this sector for 39 years: working in PE and coaching,“ she replies when asked.
But has much changed in that time? „A huge amount,“ she says. The sports programme has been completely transformed, with a focus on having qualified coaches working with the children; it has been one of the main priorities for the last three decades. „When I was young, it was just anyone. We have been following this up systematically and have had incentives regarding coach education and getting the clubs to have the children coach regularly.“
Magnificent sports facilities
Elísabet says that the main campaign issue from the beginning, however, has been to secure sports facilities. „We are still at that stage. We now have magnificent sports facilities, as we have not only children who are participants in sports activities but also magnificent young people and young adults who are doing brilliantly,“ she says.
