Hafnarfjörður celebrates its 112th anniversary today, as the municipality was granted borough status on 1 June 1908. A year later, on 1 June 1909, the town had a population of 1,469 and 109 children were enrolled in its primary school. Today, around 30,000 people live in Hafnarfjörður, and the number of pupils in the municipality's nursery and primary schools has grown to nearly 6,000 in total.

The birthday falls on a public holiday. Today is the perfect opportunity to enjoy all or some of what your town, Hafnarfjörður, has to offer: the great outdoors, exercise, culture, shopping and dining. Summer opening begins at all museums of the Hafnarfjörður Museum of Local History. From today, we are opening two new exhibitions. Our swimming pools are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
