A happy summer to our dear residents and other guests. We are celebrating the first day of summer in Hafnarfjörður in style and won't let the weather stop us. At Víðistaðatún the festivities run from 11 am until late in the day, and they also extend to other parts of the town.

Programme for the First of May 

  • 10 o'clock. Do you want to sail? The training group of the Þyt Sailing Club invites local residents out sailing for the day. Beginners and experienced sailors are invited to sail alone or with experienced sailors as appropriate, on the club's dinghies and keelboats.
  • 11 a.m. Hafnarfjörður Cross-Country Race at Víðistaðatún. Competition is held in six age categories, organised by the FH Athletics Department.
Age Distance
15 and over (born 2002 or earlier) approx. 2000 m.
Boys and girls aged 6 and under (born 2011 or later) approx. 200 m.
Boys and girls aged 7–8 (2009-2010) approx. 300 m.
9-10 year old boys and girls (2007-2008) approx. 400 m.
Boys and girls aged 11–12 (born 2005–2006) approx. 600 m.
13-14 year old boys and girls (2003-2004) approx. 1000 m.
Competitors aged 15 and over run first. Then the competition starts for the youngest and works its way up.
The preliminary round will be with the youngest competitors.

12-1 pm: The town council grills the first sausages in the newly built barbecue hut in Víðistaðatún. Free sausages available while stocks last.

11 am - 5 pm. Open in the Museum's Packhouse. A scavenger hunt for children around the exhibition.

14:00 Guided walk through the old town. The Hafnarfjörður Folk Museum is hosting a historical walk with a lively and entertaining guide, Ingvar Viktorsson. The walk starts from the Packhouse.

12-17 Open at Hafnarborg.

12-2 pm: Strong Men and Loud Voices at Hafnarborg. The men's choir Þrestir is holding an open rehearsal at Hafnarborg. This is an introduction to the choir, with a focus on recruiting new members.

1 pm Scout Mass in Hafnarfjarðarkirkja

13:45 Parade from Hafnarfjörður Church to Víðistaðir Square

14:00-16:00 Family programme at Víðistaðatún, organised by the Hraunbúar Scout Association. Featuring Aron Hannes, Sirkus Íslands, Birta and Hekla will be singing, and there will be a performance from the Hafnarfjörður School of Choreography. Box climbing, face painting, bouncy castles, candy floss and various scout games.

16:00 Lorry Rally by the Hafnarfjörður Motor Sports Club in Víðistaðatún. Competitors must bring their own cars – the entry fee is free. Competition vehicles from divisions within the AÍH will be on display during the festival programme.
