Hafnarborg's Autumn Exhibition 2019 – proposals invited
As in previous years, curators have the opportunity to submit proposals for next year's autumn exhibition at Hafnarborg. This year's Hafnarborg autumn exhibition, All weathers, was selected from last year's notable proposals and was opened on 31 August.
As in previous years, curators have the opportunity to submit proposals for next year's autumn exhibition at Hafnarborg. This year's Hafnarborg autumn exhibition, All weathers, was selected from last year's notable proposals and was opened on 31 August.
The aim of inviting submissions is to have the opportunity to select a curator with an interesting exhibition proposal for collaboration, whilst also giving new people a chance to get involved. Particular consideration is therefore given to providing opportunities for curators with a short career to date. It has proven that there is every reason to maintain such a project, as it has led to a variety of diverse and interesting exhibitions that have attracted attention and had good attendance.
Proposals are invited for group exhibitions where the theme, working method or other ideas connect the artists' works. Exhibitions that involve an analysis or a perspective on the work of a specific artist are also considered. Exhibitions of works by contemporary artists and exhibitions involving historical analysis are equally considered.
The deadline for submitting proposals expires Sunday, 18th November. Proposals are only accepted online at the email address hafnarborg@hafnarfjordur.is.
The application process is in two parts.
Part 1
In the first round, the following information is requested:
- A description of the project, with an emphasis on the concept behind the exhibition (maximum 1000 words).
- Curator's CV.
- Short CVs of the artist(s) and others proposed to be part of the exhibition project.
Please provide as detailed a description as possible, but adhere to the specified word count. Catalogues, images or DVDs are not accepted in the first round. Please familiarise yourself with the premises of Hafnarborg before submitting proposals. The Art Council of Hafnarborg, together with the director, will evaluate the submitted proposals and select those for further consideration.
2. Part
Curators whose proposals are selected for further consideration will be invited to present their ideas and submit supplementary material, such as exhibition catalogues, images or DVDs, in addition to which a realistic budget for the exhibition must be prepared. The autumn exhibition for the following year will be selected from this pool by 10 December.
By calling for proposals, a new perspective on visual art is being opened up, while also giving new curators the opportunity to work on exhibitions. It is anticipated that the exhibition and the work involved will fit within the museum's budget, or that ways will be sought to secure external support for the project.
When assessing proposals, the following will be considered:
- Selection of artists.
- Whether the exhibition presented an innovative perspective on visual art – content and/or media.
- Whether the works in the exhibition are new or older, or a mixture of new and old.
- Whether the exhibition has a specific reference to Hafnarborg, i.e. the museum's collection, its surroundings, town life, etc.
- Whether the exhibition makes original use of the space at Hafnarborg.
- Curator's CV (especially seeking curators with a short career history).
- Proposals for a programme in connection with the exhibition (tours, symposia, courses).
- Suggestions for a possible version.
- That the cost of the project is within a reasonable budget (a more detailed breakdown of costs is provided in the later stage of the process).
Drawings of the halls at Hafnarborg can be seen below. They are intended as a guide for preparing proposals, but exhibitions do not have to be designed precisely to fit the space.

Please send suggestions to the email address hafnarborg@hafnarfjordur.is. Confirmation that the proposal has been received will be sent. Please contact 585 5790 if you do not receive confirmation. All results will be sent by email.
Proposals must be marked „Autumn 2019“.
