„The Heart of the Neighbourhood“ 20 years
Hraunvallaskóli celebrated its 20th anniversary yesterday, alongside the parents' association's spring festival, which was postponed this spring due to the weather. The sun was shining and smiles were frozen on the children's faces. This was the first of many events to celebrate the anniversary.
Hraunvallaschool 20 years
It was a jolly occasion at Hraunvallar School for its twentieth anniversary yesterday. Parents, pupils, teachers and neighbours met and celebrated together.
„Looking back over these two decades, it is fair to say that Hraunvallar School is the heart of the neighbourhood,“ says Mayor Valdimar Víðisson, who celebrated the 20 years yesterday. The school is unique for its strong parental involvement.
Spring festival in autumn
Lars Jóhann Imsland Hilmarsson, head teacher of Hraunvallaskóli for the past 14 years, says yesterday's celebration was a great success.
„This was the first of many events this winter to celebrate the school's 20th anniversary,“ he says. „Yes, 20 years – time flies,“ he tells the website. As headteacher, he has watched the school grow and flourish. The school's Parent-Teacher Association held its spring festival, which was postponed this spring. The atmosphere was fantastic, with bouncy castles, face painting, street food and the VÆB brothers rounding off the festivities.
Lars says that over these fourteen years, the school has undergone significant changes. „We had up to 900 pupils at our peak, but there were 400 when I started. Now we're back up to 500 pupils,“ Lars explains. Skarðshlíðaskóli, and now Hamravallaskóli, have an impact, as does the fact that the neighbourhood is ageing. „We've been reborn twice, if not three times,“ he says.
A strong community in Völlunum
Valdimar says the community in Völlunum is strong, and it was enjoyable to take part in the festival with students, staff, parents and other residents.
„The people of Völlunum have taken an active part in building up the neighbourhood, not just with houses and streets, but by creating a community characterised by solidarity, cooperation and positivity,“ he said, adding that he envisages Hraunvallar School continuing to be the powerful pillar it has been in the neighbourhood since its inception.
„Congratulations Hraunvallaschool and congratulations Vellir!“
