The Minister of Health has confirmed a new agreement between the Ministry of Welfare and the City of Hafnarfjörður for the construction of a 60-bed care home in the municipality. The home is scheduled to be ready in spring 2018.

Health Minister Kristján Þór Júlíusson has confirmed a new agreement between the Ministry of Welfare and the City of Hafnarfjörður for the construction of a 60-bed care home in the municipality. The agreement replaces an older contract from 2010 which was not implemented. Hafnarfjörður was in the original group of municipalities that it was decided to contract with for the construction of a care home under the so-called lease model.  The home is scheduled to be ready in spring 2018.

The municipality is allocating a plot of land to the facility, in accordance with the Health Services Act, and has decided that it will be built on the Sólvang site on Sólvangsveg. According to the agreement, the City of Hafnarfjörður will bear full responsibility for the project's implementation, i.e. the design and construction, and the financing of the works. The design shall comply with the Ministry of Welfare's guidelines on Organisation of nursing homes  where the emphasis is on the conditions being as homely as possible, whilst nevertheless meeting the needs of people with disabilities and a need for nursing, training and rehabilitation.

The construction will be based on a lease model in accordance with legislation on the affairs of the elderly. This entails that the 85% state and Ageing Services Development Fund capital grant is paid monthly as rent from the time the care home is handed over for use. The council's cost contribution is 15%. The care home will become the property of the City of Hafnarfjörður, but the ownership may not be transferred during the 40-year term of the agreement. Sjúkratryggingar Íslands will advertise for an operator for the care home twelve months before the scheduled completion of the works.
