The Harbour House, the cultural and arts centre of Hafnarfjörður, displays works by leading Icelandic and international artists.
Hafnarborg's activities
The museum's exhibition programme is diverse, offering different media of contemporary art, as well as regularly exhibiting works by Icelandic artists from the first half of the 20th century. The museum houses the art collection of the City of Hafnarfjörður, in which the works of Eiríkur Smith (b. 1925) hold a prominent place. Exhibitions from the collection are regularly held.
On average, 10–12 art exhibitions are held each year. They feature works spanning Icelandic art history, from the national treasures of the pioneers to the experimental works of contemporary artists. Lectures and symposia related to the museum's exhibitions are regular features, and visitors are also offered the opportunity to converse with artists and curators.
Art workshops and guided tours for children are also regular events. During the winter, lunchtime concerts are held monthly, with an emphasis on classical music. The Hljóðön concert series is dedicated to the music of the 20th and 21st centuries, where the unique imagination and artistic struggle of composers lead audiences into previously uncharted territory.
At Hafnarborg, it is possible to hire rooms for meetings, concerts or other events. There is also a guest studio for international artists.

School visits
Hafnarborg warmly welcomes school groups to visit and view the museum's exhibitions. The aim of school visits is to encourage pupils to reflect on art and design; to see, observe, discover and express themselves. Information about the exhibitions is sent to schools in the spring and autumn.
School groups are welcome by appointment every weekday from 9 am to 4 pm, and the visit is free of charge for schools. Bookings can be made by telephone. 585 5790 or by email to hafnarborg@hafnarfjordur.is.
As a general rule, the number of students in each group should not exceed 25, so that everyone gets the most out of the visit. It is therefore recommended to split larger groups into two or more smaller groups.
