On Thursday, 20th September, the pupils and staff of Skarðshlíðarskóli ran their first „Mile“. On Wednesday, 13th March, it is a big day for the same group, as they will run the Mile for the hundredth time. A Hundred Mile Festival was held at the school to mark the occasion.

The project is based on a Scottish model called The Daily Mile . Around 5,000 schools worldwide are taking part in the project, but Skarðshlíðarskóli is the first Icelandic school to do so. Every day, all pupils go outside for 15 minutes to walk, jog or run. Research has shown significant benefits for everyone with this simple approach. These include improved well-being, increased self-confidence, better concentration, improved communication, reduced stress and anxiety, and increased perseverance. Furthermore, it is a powerful way to tackle obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. There is a lot to gain, and we are already starting to see great results after having walked the Mile a hundred times!
