Disruption to operations and services due to the weather.

Extremely bad weather is expected later today, and a state of alert has been declared for the entire country. It is important that all residents and others who do not need to be out unless absolutely necessary go home before the weather hits and stay at home. The weather is forecast to hit at the latest by 5 p.m. today and last late into the night. There is a great deal of uncertainty regarding tomorrow, how the weather will be and how transport will be restored after the storm. We urge residents to be patient, enjoy being at home and to keep a close eye on announcements and news updates. The fire brigade, police and rescue services are particularly grateful for how well things went during the last storm, which passed over the capital region on 1 December. how well the residents of all the municipalities, and by extension parents and guardians, followed the advice and recommendations.

Possible disruption to school activities on Tuesday, 8 December

The weather could disrupt school activities tomorrow morning, however, the aim is to keep primary schools open. Keep an eye on announcements: http://shs.is/

Children must be collected by 4:00 p.m.

SHS, the police and the civil defence are advising that children are collected from schools and after-school clubs before 4 p.m. today, so that they are safely at home when the weather hits. Schools have also been asked to ensure that children do not leave unless accompanied by an adult, as they are safe there. 

Sports facilities and swimming pools close at 4 p.m. 

All sports facilities in the City of Hafnarfjörður will be closed from 4 p.m. today. All sports club training sessions are cancelled. The City of Hafnarfjörður's municipal offices close at 15:00 today, but the customer service centre will be open until 16:00, as on other days. The library and Hafnarborg close at 15:00, and other cultural institutions in the City of Hafnarfjörður close at 16:00.

Public transport

An effort will be made to maintain Strætó bs. services until 6 p.m. today, but disruption may occur earlier. The Disabled Travel Service aims to have all passengers home by 16:30. Passengers with booked journeys after this time are advised to contact the customer service centre to amend their journey or cancel via the taxi service's online portal.

Drainage

It is foreseeable that the storm will be accompanied by a thaw, particularly as the night progresses, and it is therefore recommended that drains are cleared where possible. It is advisable to attend to this as soon as possible while access is still available.
