Feeling fresh well into old age!
FH, supported by the health-conscious town of Hafnarfjörður, is holding an information meeting tomorrow about its fantastic sports programme for the over-60s. The meeting is at 1 p.m. in the Sjónarhóll banqueting hall at Kaplakriki.
Eva Friðgeirsdóttir, project manager for Frísk at FH, says the work has grown stronger in recent years. The project is twofold. „The idea is to open the sports club FH up to a more diverse group, make better use of the facilities when they are least used, and also to offer organised activities and exercise for the 60+ age group,“ she says.
„This is group training under the guidance of a qualified coach. We base all the movement on the principles of what is appropriate for this age group.“
Let's achieve success together
Eva says it is well-known that people who know the group they exercise with get on better. „It's the same group, the same people, the same coach who meet every time. It really encourages social connection,“ she says, adding that people often initially attend a class to improve their health and get some exercise, but it then evolves into attending to avoid missing out on the social aspect.
„Exercise is essential for us, but many people can't stick to that lifestyle because they don't find it fun enough. But when people are in a group, session after session under the guidance of the same coach, it becomes fun,“ she emphasises. She also notes that the 12-week spring course achieved great success.
- Tolerance increased by 14% on average during the period.
- Upper body strength increased by 35% during the period.
- Lower body strength increased by 36% during the period.
Again part of the sporting spirit
Eva says it's worth getting 60+ at FH. „We want people to become participants in the club's social activities. Individuals who have been involved with FH for many years—as athletes, parents and supporters—will once again become members of the sports club,“ she says. More active members are an asset to the sports clubs.
„More life, that's a good thing,“ she says. But when does the group work start then?
„We're starting next week, on the 19th of August. The presentation meeting is tomorrow.. When the finest registration is complete, we now want to add to the groups. We're setting a maximum of 20 people per group, with a 75% attendance rate. That makes about fifteen in each group, which is a great number for getting to know and connect with others. There are some great people here. These are fun groups,“ says Eva.
