The City of Hafnarfjörður provides education for parents of young children with the aim of raising parents' awareness of the importance of language development. Numerous studies have shown that by stimulating language development, it is possible to strengthen the fundamental elements of literacy and support good academic achievement.
This project is part of Hafnarfjörður's literacy strategy and is carried out in close collaboration with the Hafnarfjörður Public Library and the health centres in Hafnarfjörður. Hafnarfjörður Public Library and the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður have joined forces to give all children aged 6 to 24 months a book as a gift, which is presented at an educational meeting in each individual neighbourhood. All parents of children in this age group are invited to the educational meeting in their neighbourhood. If the time of a meeting in your area is not convenient, you are welcome to attend a meeting in another area.
Meeting agenda
- A talk on language development and language stimulation, delivered by the council's speech and language therapists.
- A brief introduction to the Hafnarfjörður Library and its services for children and parents.
