Well over 60,000 people have visited the Christmas Village in Hafnarfjörður this Advent. The final day of these six holy days is now underway – St. Lucia's Day. „We are over the moon with this year's reception,“ says Valdimar Víðisson, the mayor.
„There have been lots of people here every weekend since about mid-November, and the atmosphere has been both fun and festive. Everyone comes here in a good mood and leaves in a proper Christmas and festive spirit.“
The Christmas Village in Hafnarfjörður has grown and thrived for 22 years. This is the first time that visitor numbers have been counted in Thorspark. Sunna Magnúsdóttir, the project manager for the Christmas Village, says, however, that it is perfectly clear that more people have never visited the town.
„The count is only for the square, but the area is so much bigger. The Heart Field has been sold out day after day. There has been a steady stream in Hellisgerði and sometimes a parade-like atmosphere from the Christmas Village into this art park of ours,“ says Sunna, where a new café has been opened. Sunna doesn't just see the increase in the counters. „We see it in the rubbish, too. We're constantly emptying the bins.“
She says it's clear that people are enjoying the company in the heart of Hafnarfjörður. „Over 2000 litres of hot chocolate have gone down the throats of our guests,“ says Sunna.
„It has been fantastic to watch it grow. So far, we've been so lucky with the weather, although those of us who live in Iceland know that you can't count on it. Then there's the calm at Thorsplan.“
Sunna says the Christmas Village has been strengthened by a new Fjørður. „It's the perfect way to enjoy the final days before Christmas in the newly refurbished Fjörður, stroll along Strandgatan and soak up the festive spirit on Thorsplani, where Hubbubba and Svala will be entertaining on the final day of the Christmas Village's last weekend.“
- The Christmas village is open from 13:00 to 21:00 today, Christmas Eve.
Merry Christmas.
