The policy shall be taken into account in all activities of the municipality.

The aim of the environmental policy is to ensure all residents of Hafnarfjörður have a healthy and safe environment in which to live, play and work.  It shall be taken into account in all activities of the municipality. The City of Hafnarfjörður shall strive to be at the forefront of sustainability and environmental matters, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the generation of waste. Emphasis is placed on the sustainable use and protection of nature and its resources. Pollution will be minimised and environmental monitoring will be active.

The new environmental and resource policy is based on the environmental and resource policy of the City of Hafnarfjörður, which was adopted on 18 May 2018. The policy itself has been revised, with items removed that are no longer applicable and others added. Furthermore, the joint climate policy of the Capital Region, adopted on 11 August 2023, is taken into account, and measures are set out that can contribute to Hafnarfjörður's carbon neutrality by 2035. The policy also includes Hafnarfjörður's climate strategy. Also taken into account are the overarching policies of the City of Hafnarfjörður, which were approved on 6 April 2022, and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
