The imposition of stop-off charges has begun

The Hafnarfjörður Parking Fund has been launched. In mid-June, the imposition of parking charges began on vehicles illegally parked in the town. From April until mid-June, drivers who parked illegally received only a warning ticket on their cars to draw attention to the changed enforcement of parking offences.

Illegal installation can create a hazard

The Parking Fund's role is to ensure compliance with the established traffic laws, as well as the police by-law, and its jurisdiction covers all neighbourhoods in Hafnarfjörður. The aim is not to fine as many people as possible, but to make traffic in the town safer and more accessible for all of us – pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and not least for emergency services.  Particular emphasis is placed on areas where illegal parking can create a hazard or obstruct access, such as near pavements, footpaths, crossings, disabled parking bays and bus stops. This also includes vehicles parked against the flow of traffic. This type of offence is the most common parking offence in Hafnarfjörður. The Road Traffic Act is clear regarding such an offence, but section 28 of the Act states: „A vehicle may only be stopped or parked on the right-hand side of the road. Where there is one-way traffic, however, other rules may apply, see section 1 of Article 84. Outside built-up areas, a vehicle may only be stopped or parked on the right-hand side with regard to the direction of travel. With a coordinated effort, it is possible to create a safer and more accessible environment for everyone.

Do you wish to object to the imposition?

If you believe that a parking charge has been incorrectly applied, you need to submit an appeal via the appeals portal on the Hafnarfjörður Parking Fund's information page. This ensures that your appeal is routed to the correct department and receives proper handling from the outset.

We encourage all drivers to park legally. It's a simple way to help make traffic safer and better for everyone in Hafnarfjörður.
