Like on the way: A week at the country's biggest launch party
Only a week remains until the biggest party ever held for a book launch in this country. The book LÆK, by authors Bergrún Íris Sævarsdóttir and Gunnar Helgason, consists of 18 short stories based on the ideas of 2,600 pupils from Hafnarfjörður's primary schools. Parents are currently receiving letters from the schools about the aims of the book's publication, as LÆK is intended to promote reading and reading comprehension.
LÆK is coming out and the brothers in VÆB are having fun
Only a week to go until the biggest party ever held for a book launch in this country. The book LÆK by authors Bergrún Íris Sævarsdóttir and Gunnar Helgason consists of 18 short stories based on suggestions from nearly 2,600 pupils from the primary schools of Hafnarfjörður.
Bergrún and Gunni will attend the launch party and chat about the book. The brothers from VÆB will also be there, and book boxes will be presented to the school heads and the chairs of the school councils. It's going to be great fun. The middle school pupils will arrive at 9 a.m. and the senior school pupils at 10:15 a.m. at Thorsplan.
Parents receive a letter from the school about the book
Parents are currently receiving a letter from the schools about the aims of the book publication, but LÆK is a collaborative project between the Education and Public Health Department of Hafnarfjörður and the authors. The book is intended to enhance reading comprehension, vocabulary, literacy and reading interest among pupils in the middle and upper years of Hafnarfjörður's primary schools, at all ability levels. The short stories are linked to each school, and two stories were written for each of them.
For the publication of LÆK, the emphasis was placed on high-quality text layout, good typography and a font size suitable for students with reading difficulties. The book is simultaneously released as an audiobook by the National Audio Library. In addition to the short stories, the book includes a short section for parents and teachers on how to deepen pupils' reading comprehension.
All on Thorsplan on the last day of winter
The big launch party will be on the last day of winter, 24th April, at Thorsplan in Hafnarfjörður. The children will be given the book on that day and it will be worked with in all schools in Hafnarfjörður in May. However, the book is not just for the people of Hafnarfjörður but will also be available in bookshops. But will the book actually be read?
„Yes, I have no doubt about that, because now the competition is on,“ says Gunni Helga. „There will be prizes for the most interesting story in the junior and middle school categories, and everyone will have to vote for their favourite story. You're not allowed to vote for your own school. So, at the end of May, it will be revealed which school gets the prizes. The school honour is up for grabs.“

The launch party: On the last day of winter, 24th April, the country's biggest launch party will be held at Thorsplan to celebrate the release of the LÆK book.
