For many years, youth clubs in Hafnarfjörður have held the Grunnskólahátíðin, and the festival has been hugely popular with the town's young people. The festival is usually held on the first Wednesday in February, but for the past two years, it has been cancelled and its date has been moved due to the pandemic. As soon as public health authorities gave the green light for events at the start of the year, the organising committee for the 2022 festival was quick to find a new date, and cancelling it for a second year in a row was never an option. The organising committee consists of young people from Hafnarfjörður and staff from the town's youth clubs. 

After a long wait, the Primary School Festival could finally be held.

Young people lay the groundwork and organise the event.

The festival was held at the Strandgata Sports Hall on Wednesday, 16th March. The young people themselves decided on the programme and theme of the festival. As such, they were responsible for, among other things, selecting the musicians, merchandise for the shop, promoting the event, and all other planning and execution. The chosen group is supported by the staff of the youth clubs in their work.

The theme this year was Fire and Ice.

This year's theme was Fire and Ice. Every year, a competition is held between the primary schools' youth clubs for the best advert based on the theme, judged on its interpretation and whether all the important information is included. This time, Hraunvallaskóli emerged as the winner.

Lots of dancing, singing and laughing 

Various artists took to the stage at the festival this evening, but the night began and ended with DJ3hundred, who are young people from Hafnarfjörður. Also taking to the stage was Kormákur from the youth centre Öldutúnsskóli, who was one of two singing stars to win. The youth club singing competition 2022 and will therefore be one of two representatives from Hafnarfjörður in the Samfés singing competition at the end of April. DJ Dóra Júlía, Sprite Zero Klan and Auddi and Sveppi were also performing and entertaining the young people, who were a great example to follow. The atmosphere was fantastic, with lots of singing, dancing and laughter.
