Low water in streams due to repairs

News

There is little water in the Hamarskot streams due to repairs on a sewer pipe that runs through them. The stream will be refilled tomorrow and will then return to its previous water level.

The Hamarskot Stream here in Hafnarfjörður

Motorists passing our Hamarskot streams here in Hafnarfjörður do not need to be very observant to see that they are not as they usually are. Repairs to a sewer pipe running through the streams are currently underway. The dam in the streams was therefore breached and most of the water was drained earlier in the week. The repair work has gone well, and the plan is to dam the stream up again as soon as tomorrow.

The weather is calm and the stream is well-frequented by birds: swans, geese and ducks. A representative from the Animal Watch is on the bank, feeding the birds as he does every day, and says the birds are stressed by the changes now visible at the Stream.

The pipe being worked on is old. It is being relined. The time was chosen to disturb wildlife as little as possible; there are no young birds about. A contractor is carrying out the work for the City of Hafnarfjörður. Everything is going according to plan. The stream will therefore soon be back to normal, and the birds will return to a place they know.
