Maintenance and renewal of pitches and play areas in full swing
A great deal of work has gone into keeping our town clean this summer, mowing and cleaning, and maintaining open play areas and playing fields. The surfacing on two open playing fields was recently replaced with artificial grass and rubber tiles to increase the safety, usability and lifespan of the pitches.
A great deal of work has gone into keeping our town clean this summer, mowing and clearing beds, and maintaining open play areas and playing fields. The surfacing on two open playgrounds was recently replaced with artificial grass and rubber tiles to increase the safety, usability and lifespan of the play areas. These open spaces are at Laufvang and between Þrastará and Kríuá. The plan is to continue this maintenance and development work, installing durable surfacing in as many places as possible, though not all of them this summer.
A great deal of maintenance work is also taking place on nursery and primary school grounds, and the plan is to complete this work before the start of the school term in August. The work on the grounds at Hvaleyrarskóli is well advanced, and the grounds at Öldutúnsskóli are currently being worked on. Alterations at the Smáralund nursery are well advanced, and it is planned to begin minor and major alterations to the grounds at Hvamm, Vesturkot and Hlíðarberg, including the replacement of swings and spring-mounted play equipment. The renewal of fencing at Víðivelli is well advanced, and a similar renewal at Hlíðarberg is likely to begin this week. The Scout groups, who have been staying at Víðistaðatún, have been a great help to the council over the past week, and have worked on, amongst other things, creating paths at Hvaleyrarvatn and in the surrounding area, and planting hedgerow plants along the woodland edges near Víðistaðaskóli, clearing weeds from the gravel at Strandstígur by Herjólfsgata, various maintenance tasks in Hellisgerði, laying a path between Mávahraun and Svöluhraun, as well as smaller projects all over town. It's absolutely brilliant to have such extra manpower!
