The Mayor and Directors of the City of Hafnarfjörður met yesterday with the management of the Capital Region Police, based in Hafnarfjörður, following discussions on the city's neighbourhood pages about car break-ins, suspicious movements around homes and offers of services that did not comply with Icelandic law.

The meeting reviewed the situation here in Hafnarfjörður and how the authority and the municipality can further coordinate their efforts in order to increase the safety of all concerned and reduce crime overall. Measures that the local council can implement were discussed, which are considered deterrent actions, such as increased lighting in public areas and security cameras in appropriate locations. The police expressed their satisfaction with the solidarity among residents of Hafnarfjörður and how vigilant they are about their surroundings and immediate neighbourhood. Such a neighbourhood watch is in fact the most powerful weapon in the fight, as it is a major community project that affects everyone. Neighbourhood watch appears to be quite strong across the wards here in Hafnarfjörður, and the police are receiving a large number of useful tips.
