MPs for the Southwest constituency visited Hafnarfjörður
MPs for the South-West constituency visited the town of Hafnarfjörður today during constituency week from the Althingi. Town councillors, staff, and three members of the youth council welcomed the group.
Meeting at the brand-new library
MPs for the South-West constituency visited the town of Hafnarfjörður today during constituency week from the Althingi. The group met in the new premises of the Hafnarfjörður Library in Firði. There, the MPs discussed the town's development and transport issues with town councillors.
Three representatives from our youth council attended the meeting and observed. They agreed that a meeting like this was important for young people and that they would like to be at the table more often. The City of Hafnarfjörður is a child-friendly community – which means discussing children with children.
The great popularity of the library
Sigrún Guðnadóttir, the head of the library, led MPs around the new premises. She spoke of the library's growing popularity, with over 20,000 visits recorded in August. The Heimar og himingeimar festival at the beginning of September then broke attendance records, with around 12,000 people attending. It was held for the third time.
Mayor Þórður Þórarinsson and representatives of the majority presented a vision for Flensborg Harbour and the Óseyrar area. The focus was on the planned development and strengthening the connection between the city centre and the harbour. This includes open spaces and a continuous walkway along the harbour front, where a vibrant atmosphere and harbour activities coexist.
Land allocations are moving forward again
There was also discussion about how plot allocations have picked up since the rules on payment of construction and road-building charges were changed. However, the number of contracts in the last two months is already higher than for the entire first half of the year. Representatives of the town also emphasised the importance of roadworks in Hafnarfjörður.
MPs have the opportunity to visit local councils, businesses and institutions during constituency week. They meet residents and learn about the issues that are of concern to people in their constituencies. The visit provided a good opportunity to present to MPs the main priorities of the City of Hafnarfjörður in development and transport.
We thank the Members of Parliament for their visit and the good conversation.
