Ási the cat picks up plastic in Hafnarfjörður and takes it home.

Child-friendly municipality News

Ási the cat is 5 years old. He loves the clean Hafnarfjörður and so picks up any plastic he finds and drags it home. Yes, Ási the cat is a real help with the litter-picking. He's a role model! Let's help Ási the cat keep the beautiful fjord clean all summer long.

Do you see Ási with plastic in his mouth?

„Ási the cat is the main man in town,“ says Sigríður Júlía Bjarnadóttir, the foster carer for Ási, a cat she got from Kattholt. „He's turning five and has been picking up plastic his whole life. I have a huge bin he's collected it in. He's fussy; he only ever picks up plastic,“ says Sigríður Júlía.

Asi doesn't just take part in the Great British Plogging Day every year. He picks up rubbish every day! We can follow Asi the cat's example and pick up the plastic we see, as well as other rubbish in our beautiful town. Asi is a role model. He plogs all year round.

Ási picks daily

„He brings home plastic almost every day, sometimes two,“ says Sigríður, „but Ási takes a break when the snow covers the plastic. He sometimes brings home a bird and a mouse. But no other rubbish except plastic.“

Asi the Cat now features on a poster that is hung widely around town to remind us to keep our town clean. It can be motivating for children to receive a small reward. They will receive a poster of Asa the Cat from the customer service desk at the Town Hall if they pick up litter and put it in the nearest bin. All that is required is to show a photo of the rubbish that went in the bin, and the children will receive the poster from the service desk.

Ási the remarkable cat

Ási the cat is a remarkable cat. He even has a Facebook page. There you can see the plastic he collects, but also how he runs all over Hafnarfjörður. „He was fitted with a GPS device and we saw that he goes far and wide. He has covered 10 km in a single day. But now he has lost the device.“

Sigríður Júlía is proud of Ása kisa. She has kept hold of all the plastic he has dragged home. „Yes, Ása kisa is useful. Some of the plastic is terribly filthy. I think he sometimes goes down into gullies and fetches the plastic,“ says Sigríður Júlía.

„I hope his initiative will be an inspiration to others. Perhaps children could take up picking up litter when they see how hard Ási the cat is at it!“ says Sigríður hopefully. „Yes, he's a great cat.“

We encourage you all to keep beautiful Hafnarfjörður clean — just like Ási does!
