Everyone behind the show

Pure theatrical joy will be shining from every face of the Year 10 pupils at Víðistaðaskóli on Friday when they premiere the musical Mamma Mia. A cast of nearly fifty people are on stage. Another forty play supporting roles. The production is a full-scale affair. Parents, teachers and pupils have all pitched in to help, sewing costumes and building the set.

The shows run from 13th to 15th February and there are five in total. Two are sold out and tickets are running out fast. Tickets cost 3,200 krónur in general, but 1,700 for those in Year 7 and younger.

„It's going well. There's a lot of work going on,“ says Úlfhildur Harne Örnólfsdóttir, the show's director. „We were handed the stage and the auditorium on Monday and now everyone's hands are full. It's very busy. Now the theatrical magic happens,“ she says. „It's becoming real. The lights are on them and they're about to be performed. Excitement, anticipation, and they're filled to the brim with glitter.“„There will be 49 of them on stage, but the year group itself is larger. There are about 90 of them and they all get involved in the show in one way or another. There are so many roles when it comes to a production like this. They work on set design, costumes, and marketing. There are lots of jobs and they all take part.“

The students are funding their graduation trip to Þórsmörk this spring with the show. The musical is also part of their art and craft studies. Úlfhildur encourages people to be quick and secure their tickets. „Last I heard, 70% of the tickets had been sold.“

She describes how a huge dance troupe and choir take up a large part of the show on stage. „On top of that, the parents have been so incredibly active. They've been here since the beginning of January, building, sewing, fixing and making things.“

Sýn's news agency visited the group during their preparations. There, the children performed a few routines from the show.

And so the weekend goes, with its adventures. Úlfhildur says she has already talked to the kids about what a strange feeling it will be after the weekend. „Monday will be nice; having the evening off. But soon they'll be wondering what to do with all their time! It's taken up so much time for so long. It'll be a shock for them all,“ says Úlfhildur, full of anticipation for the harvest.
