A new and simpler Strætó route network in Hafnarfjörður
A new and simpler bus network in Hafnarfjörður came into effect earlier this summer, when routes 19 and the extended route 21 replaced routes 22, 33, 34, 43 and 44, which ceased operating. The new arrangement should better suit a large group of Strætó users who travel to school or work within and/or outside Hafnarfjörður.
Attention residents, students, staff and other bus users, present and future!
A new and simpler bus network in Hafnarfjörður came into effect earlier this summer, when routes 19 and the extended route 21 replaced routes 22, 33, 34, 43 and 44, which ceased operating. These changes streamline the Strætó routes in Hafnarfjörður in line with the Borgarlína project, while also making the routes more direct and reducing journey times. The new arrangement should therefore be better suited to a large group of bus users who travel to school or work within and/or outside Hafnarfjörður. And not least for older primary school pupils who attend their leisure activities and training sessions around the town.
This is what the new Strætó route system in Hafnarfjörður looks like. The new route network came into effect on 14 June 2020.
More direct routes and shorter journey times
The changes came into effect in mid-June after extensive consideration and good consultation with Strætó users. Route 19 runs at 15-minute intervals during peak hours and 30-minute intervals outside peak hours. Route 21 will continue to run at 30-minute intervals. Connections to routes 1 and 55 will be available at Firði. The changes are intended to better suit a large group of users, but in some cases, Strætó users will now have to walk a longer distance to the next stop. The system is constantly under review, and it is hoped that these changes will encourage more groups of people to see the value and benefit of using the bus as their main mode of transport, whether within the municipality or when travelling around the capital region.

Major improvement projects ahead
This is the first phase of the major Metro project, in which route 1 plays a major part, starting and ending at Völlunum. In the coming years, public transport in the capital region will undergo significant changes. The two main improvement projects are, on the one hand, the construction of infrastructure for a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, and on the other, a review of the Strætó route network in preparation for the introduction of the City Line, which requires the network to be adapted to utilise its infrastructure. This will ensure that the public transport system functions as a single, integrated system.
