The new junction of Reykjanesbraut and Krýsuvíkurvegur will be opened at 13:00 today, Friday, 15 December.  A ceremony will be held at the junction on the west side, where Transport Minister Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson will formally open the junction with the assistance of the Director of Public Works. Also in attendance at the opening will be the Mayor of Hafnarfjörður and representatives from the City of Hafnarfjörður, the Road Administration, the contractor, and others who have been involved in the project. The contractors are Loftorka Reykjavík ehf. and Suðurverk hf.

Work began in March 2017. However, various finishing works still remain to be completed, and these will be finished in the spring of 2018. The project involves the construction of a grade-separated junction between the Reykjanesbraut and Krýsuvíkurveg.

The works also include alterations to Krýsuvíkurveg, the construction of a connecting road to Suðurbraut and a connecting road to Selhællan. Also included is the construction of a footpath and cycle path along the Suðurbraut connection and speed-reducing measures on Suðurbraut. The construction of a noise barrier on the Reykjanesbraut in Hafnarfjörður is also part of the project. In addition, changes to utility systems and landscaping are included.

Tenders for the project were opened on 22 February 2017. A contract was signed on 21 March 2017 and work commenced. Construction of the bridge structure began on 21 July 2017. The contract completion date was 1 November 2017, but this was delayed for various reasons. The total cost is estimated at approximately 1.1 billion króna.
