One new split-level container at a detached house
Dwellings (single, two and three-unit) will be provided with a 240L two-chambered bin for food waste and mixed waste for each property address. For dwellings, a new bin will be added, making three bins the standard at each property. The existing bins will be re-labelled for plastic on the one hand, and paper on the other.
New bin for food waste in multi-family housing
All households will be provided with a 240L brown bin for food waste, and the number of bins is tailored to the needs of each household. Grey bins will be re-labelled for mixed waste and plastic, and blue bins will be re-labelled for paper.
A basket and paper bags in every home
Alongside the distribution of new containers, all households in Hafnarfjörður will receive a plastic basket and a bag for the collection of food waste at home. The basket ensures that the bag is aired, keeping it dry. The bags are crucial for the production of usable compost from the food waste. It is a good idea to empty the paper bags regularly into a new bin for food waste.
Requests for bespoke solutions will be considered from the autumn.
Residents are encouraged to try a new collection schedule and number of bins over the summer and into the autumn to get the best sense of their household's needs, particularly regarding the sorting of paper and plastic. The collection frequency will remain the same: every 28 days for plastic and paper, and every 14 days for food and mixed waste. In the autumn, when the rollout is complete, it will be possible to purchase another 240L two-wheeled bin for plastic and paper, and to replace the existing one with a 240L plastic bin and a 240L paper bin.
