Implementation of a new waste sorting system begins in May

In May, the implementation of a new waste sorting system will begin in Hafnarfjörður, as in other municipalities in the capital region, where four waste streams will henceforth be collected from every household in the town.

The waste categories are:

  • Food remains
  • Mixed waste
  • Plastic packaging
  • Paper and cardboard

Each household will receive a new bin delivered to their home and handed over for their use. A delivery schedule will be announced in mid-May, when residents of the town's neighbourhoods will receive more detailed information about when their bins will arrive. Alongside the distribution of rubbish bins, all households will receive plastic bins and paper bags for collecting food waste at home. Other types of waste must be taken directly to the appropriate containers at Sorpu or to nearby collection points, where applicable.

New rubbish bin

At each detached house A single 240-litre, two-chamber bin will be added. The two-chamber bin will be for food waste and mixed waste. The existing rubbish bins will be re-labelled. The grey bin for plastic packaging and the blue bin will continue to be for paper and cardboard. Therefore, all single-family homes will have three bins after the change.

We multi-tenancy Brown 240-litre bins for food waste will be added, with the number of bins tailored to the needs of each block of flats. Grey bins/carts will then be rebranded for mixed waste and plastic. Blue bins/carts for paper/cardboard will also be rebranded. For multi-unit properties with underground containers, collaboration with residents' associations has begun to find a solution for the collection of the four waste streams.

Further information about the new waste sorting system can be found on the joint information website of the municipalities in the capital region: flokkum.is. Residents are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the new system and begin preparing for sorting at home.
