It is important to know the roots
„History is the foundation of the present day,“ says Björn Pétursson, the town centre warden. „When we know the history, we know what we are standing on. We have a rich history that we must uphold. It makes it easier for us to understand the present day, to know where we come from and where we are going.“
Björn is pleased with the page. „It's fun. It's light and hopefully sparks people's interest to know more. Those who then want to delve deeper into the story are always welcome on The Folk Museum.“
The story shows the roots of the town.
You can see on the website how the population rose rapidly, when the main institutions were founded and when cultural institutions were established. Also the various memorable and entertaining events – such as when handball was first introduced. This is a page that shows how the town has grown and flourished in an entertaining way.
Did you know, for instance, that the Hellisgerði amusement park was opened in 1923? The population had then reached 2,579. The page contains a wealth of information and traces the history up to Hellisgerði's 100th anniversary, almost two years ago. But of course, this is no end point; additions will be made, and the new site will blossom just like the town's life.
Let's enjoy the story and see the pillars upon which we build our society!
