Nine Christmas-decorated homes and two businesses receive recognition

Yes, we are the Christmas town.

Hafnfirðingar certainly put on their big Christmas glasses when they looked around and nominated the best-decorated Christmas houses in town. Over a hundred suggestions were received.

„It has been a challenging but wonderful task to select from all these glorious nominations,“ said Guðbjörg Oddný Jónasdóttir, chair of the Culture and Tourism Committee, at the awards ceremony on Friday.

„Every single house and business being honoured here today has one thing in common: they have put pride, love and creativity into brightening the dark days for all of us. These awards are our way of saying thank you for making the Christmas town of Hafnarfjörður so magical, as is evident,“ she said.

Let's see which houses stood out this year:

• Blómvangur 1 „At 1 Blómvang, the owners have created a stylish and beautiful Christmas display that significantly brightens up the corner where the house stands. Magnificent reindeer and high-quality decorations give the house a majestic and classic appearance that catches the eye and brings a true festive spirit to all passers-by.“
• Hafravellir 12 „Hafravellir 12 received an award for its unique splendour of colour and ambition, as residents have continued to add to their fantastical decorations year after year. It is wonderful to see how the house delights the eyes of local nursery school children and creates immeasurable Christmas joy for both children and adults.“
• Furuvellir 19 „Furuvellir 19 is a veritable Christmas wonderland and one of the most decorated houses in Hafnarfjörður, where the owners outdo themselves in originality and a love of colour every year. The garden is magical and provides neighbours and visitors with a unique experience, characterised by great ambition and a true Christmas spirit.“
• Heiðvangur 28 „At Heiðvang 28, one is met with imagination and great joy in the form of colourful decorations, which are particularly well-suited to this prominent corner plot. It is clear that the decorations have been put up with love to beautify the surroundings and delight all who pass by.“
• Heiðvangur 60 „Heiðvangur 60 receives an award for a beautiful and cohesive Christmas display, with the house tastefully decorated at both the front and back. The colourful lights create a warm setting for the home and greatly enhance the street scene.“
• Sævangur 15 „Sævangur 15 is a true Christmas paradise, where every little detail has been considered in a colourful and grand adventure that greets all who pass along Hjallabrautin. The splendour of the lights is exemplary, wonderfully bringing the surroundings to life with a variety of colours and shapes.“
• Unnarstígur 1 „The house at 1 Unnarstíg is exceptionally well-situated, standing atop a hill and featuring stylish string lights that frame the patio and garden. With each passing year, the owners have tastefully added to the lighting, ensuring it blends perfectly with the house's natural surroundings.“
• Sævangur 52 „At Sævang 52, the space is used in an exceptionally clever and beautiful way, with an abundance of lights surrounding the garden and the house. Beautiful decorations at the entrance and continuous strings of lights on the bushes surrounding the garden create a warm and cohesive Christmas atmosphere.“
• Elf Age 102-104 „Solborg Hulda at Álfaskeiði 102-104 receives a special commendation for livening up the block of flats with large and beautiful decorations that stand out. This initiative shows how a great Christmas atmosphere can be created in a block of flats, bringing increased brightness and joy to all neighbours and passers-by.“

Two companies were recognised for their tasteful decorations.

•  Burkni „The Burni Flower Shop received recognition for its tasteful and extensive Christmas decorations, which perfectly fit the spirit of the Christmas Village. The abundant display of lights in the windows and around the shop deepens the Christmas atmosphere in the town centre and welcomes visitors with great warmth.“
• Brown „The Kaki shop is exemplary when it comes to Christmas decorations on the High Street, with its splendidly lit-up windows that catch the eye. This dedication to decorating its shop windows with strings of lights makes our Christmas town even more beautiful and encourages others to take part in beautifying the town centre.“

Guðbjörg Oddný thanked everyone who sent in suggestions, as well as those who decorate their homes and businesses so beautifully in the run-up to Christmas. „It's these collective miracles of ours, the people of Hafnarfjörður, that make it so nice to be here during the winter darkness,“ she said.
