Multicultural Society of Hafnarfjörður
Would you like to chat with the intercultural project manager for the City of Hafnarfjörður? Share your ideas, get advice or discuss matters? Now is your chance. You can book a half-hour chat on Teams, or meet the project manager in person every Wednesday between 9:30 am and 11:30 am.
„The consultation hours are open to all residents of Hafnarfjörður. I would like to meet people who want to discuss the town's affairs, issues concerning immigrants, and people who are interested in taking part in events or projects that promote the integration of people of foreign origin,“ says Hildur Ýr Jónsdóttir, project manager for multicultural affairs in the City of Hafnarfjörður.

The open meetings are the first on multiculturalism in Hafnarfjörður, as Hildur is the town's first full-time multicultural project manager, paving the way for a more vibrant multicultural town.
Listening for opportunities
Hildur says it is important that both she and other residents connect with the community, and that this is the aim of the conversation. „I would like to hear how the town can better cater for its residents.“
She says this is an opportunity to hear directly what can be done better and what suits each community. „So I want to listen,“ she says.
„To listen and see if there are opportunities in the community that the town is missing out on. It's important to open up the conversation, to ensure it's not just internal and one-sided, but also out in the community.“
Promoting democratic participation before elections
Hildur has worked as the intercultural project manager in Hafnarfjörður since mid-2025. She works across the municipality's departments, institutions, divisions and projects. Her role is to enhance and pioneer new approaches to the reception of people of foreign origin and to encourage their increased participation in society. The local council elections are approaching, and preparations are in full swing.
„The project Democratic participation of immigrants has taken off. We have set up a series of workshops and educational sessions at the Innovation Centre of Hafnarfjörður on how democracy in Iceland works, to encourage the participation of immigrants in the local council elections this May.“ Participation is free and all are welcome.
