Open for autumn enrolment in primary schools and after-school clubs
Enrolment is now open for children starting Year 1 of primary school in Hafnarfjörður in the autumn of 2026. The initial application deadline is 1 March. At the same time, registration has opened for pupils for after-school care at each school's own club. Applications for the after-school club are made via Vala, while applications for a school place are made through My Pages on the town's website.

Hafnarfjörður is one school district divided into school catchment areas.
The primary schools of Hafnarfjörður are open to all children, regardless of where they live in the town. Parents are encouraged to find out about the work of the schools. Hafnarfjörður is a single school district divided into school catchment areas, and a pupil's registered address determines which local school they are assigned to. Please note that the youngest year group at Skarðshlíðarskóli is full.
It is possible to apply for a school in another ward, and an application before 1 March can be a deciding factor in whether it is possible to attend a school outside one's own school ward. The enrolment of children in primary school and after-school care is the responsibility of the parent/guardian.

Enrolment for primary school takes place online via My pages under: Applications – Primary Schools – Primary School Places.
Please note that applications for Hafnarfjörður's primary schools can only be submitted via the city's website. Applications for other primary schools in the municipality and for primary schools in other municipalities must be submitted directly to the relevant school. If that school place is accepted, an application for payment contribution from Hafnarfjörður must be submitted. Applications are submitted electronically via My pages under:

Further information will be sent from the school closer to the time.
The school where a child is placed will send all important information about the school's activities to parents/guardians as spring approaches. Information will be sent out, including about the meal plan and special play schemes held in August each year for 6-year-olds. This prepares them before primary school begins.
Enrolment for the 6-year course takes place in the spring and is advertised separately.
