Notification to child protection

Anyone who has reason to believe that a child is experiencing violence or neglect is obliged to report it to the child protection authority. According to Icelandic child protection laws Individuals under the age of 18 are considered children. The law also covers unborn children, for example, if they are at risk from the mother's substance misuse or from violence she experiences.

The person reporting to the child protection committee must give their name, but anonymity can be requested. Only the staff member investigating the matter knows the name of the reporter. The person making the announcement must provide their name, email address and telephone number so that they can be contacted for further information.
