Reporting to child protection services / Notification to the Office for Child Protection

According to Icelandic law, individuals under the age of 18 are considered children. It is the duty of anyone to report to child protection services any suspicion that a child may be suffering from unacceptable upbringing, neglect, harassment or violence, or that their health and development may be in serious danger. Icelandic law also includes unborn children who may be at risk because the mother is a drug abuser or is herself a victim of violence.

Reports to child protective services are held in strict confidence. Name, telephone number and email address are provided when making a report, in case child protection needs to contact you for more information. However, the person making the report can request anonymity so that only the child protective services officer to whom they reported it will know who made the report.
