Classification posters for blocks of flats
In mid-May 2023, the implementation of a new waste sorting system began in Hafnarfjörður, similar to the rest of the capital region, where four waste streams will henceforth be collected from every household in the town in accordance with the law. Sorpa recently released sorting posters in three languages, intended for multi-occupancy properties. Residents' associations in Hafnarfjörður are encouraged to print them out and display them in all relevant places. A residents' meeting is also an ideal opportunity to get everyone on the same page and ensure that all residents are fully informed and understand the arrangements.
New bin for food waste in multi-family housing
All households have received or are in the process of receiving a 240L brown bin for food waste, with the number of bins tailored to the needs of each household. Brown bins are re-labelled for mixed waste and plastic, and blue bins for paper. Information about the number of new bins per household – New waste sorting system | Hafnarfjörður (hafnarfjordur.is)
Incorrect waste sorting prevents collection
Alongside the distribution of new rubbish bins in each neighbourhood, rubbish is collected, older bins are re-labelled, and a grace period is given until the next collection. This marks the formal start of the sorting scheme. Particular attention is drawn to the fact that if incorrect sorting is found in a bin during the second collection, after new bins and re-labelling have taken place, a notice will be placed indicating that it has not been emptied. Residents will then need to sort the waste themselves and the bin will be emptied at the next collection. Residents are encouraged to start sorting correctly as soon as their new bins are delivered. Some blocks of flats have already encountered problems, so it is important that everyone is informed and aware of the new sorting system.
