Lækur – a sanctuary for individuals with mental health challenges

The shelter recently moved to Staðarberg 6 and the premises are now most splendid. One of Læk's main aims is to be a safe and welcoming space for people, with the goal of reducing social isolation, promoting interaction, and strengthening both mental and physical health, so that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy themselves. At Lækur, breakfast, lunch and coffee are available for a small charge.

Recreation and education on a peer-to-peer basis

Lækur is not a conventional treatment centre or institution, but a setting where the emphasis is on creating a homely atmosphere on an equal footing.

A variety of recreational and educational activities are offered in the day centre's daily programme, with a primary focus on exercise, relaxation, communication, socialising and games. The service is user-led, meaning that visitors have an influence on shaping the activities.

We have also taken pride in setting up a vegetable garden where we grow vegetables for use in lunch. In addition, we have two hens in the back garden which are looked after by guests.

Emphasis will be placed on further increasing the diversity of our activities, as there is a strong desire for everyone to be able to find something interesting to suit them, with creativity and design as our guiding principles.
