Plastic-free September – let's get actively involved!
Plastic-Free September is an awareness campaign with the important aim of making people think about their plastic consumption and the plastic waste generated in everyday life. The Municipality of Hafnarfjörður is one of its sponsors.
Plastic-free September is an awareness campaign, which was held for the first time in September 2017. Participation exceeded the wildest expectations, and it was clear that the ground is fertile when it comes to environmental issues in Iceland. The campaign is an annual event, and preparatory work is carried out all year round – for example, with education about plastic-free solutions on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, and in the form of lectures at businesses and schools. The campaign has grown significantly since its first year, and more and more people are realising the harmful effects of single-use plastic on the environment.
Hafnarfjörður supports the awareness campaign!
The campaign aims to make people think.
The aim of the project is to make people think about their use of plastic and the plastic waste generated in everyday life, and to find ways to reduce this usage. A huge amount of single-use plastic is landfilled or ends up in the ocean, which is a major cause for concern. All plastic that has ever been produced still exists and does not decompose; that is, the plastic that has not ended up in landfill. The plastic breaks down into smaller particles (microplastics), and its effects on wildlife are not fully understood.
Plastic-Free September encourages us to use less single-use plastic and to choose products made from other materials where possible. The challenge isn't about being completely plastic-free for the whole month, but about setting a personal goal to reduce your use of single-use plastic packaging.
We encourage people to take an active part in Plastic-Free September.
