The position of Director of the Family and Child Services Department for the City of Hafnarfjörður is now open for applications. We are seeking a strong leader to manage the department's day-to-day operations and to lead the important and diverse projects under its remit.

The work of the Department of Family and Child Affairs has been characterised by great ambition and development, with a constant search for new ways to enhance the service and increase efficiency, for example through increased digitalisation. The department handles a wide range of projects and services in the fields of child protection, social work and housing, matters concerning disabled people, support and ancillary services for older people, services for applicants for international protection and refugees, multiculturalism, and in the field of family and school services.

Key responsibilities and duties:

  • Daily management of the department and responsibility for its operations and services.
  • Overseeing strategy development in line with the objectives of the Family Council and the Town Council.
  • Overseeing the monitoring and evaluation of the department's services
  • Responsibility for the preparation of the department's operational and financial plans and their implementation.
  • Preparation of cases for the family board and follow-up on the board's decisions
  • Responsibility for liaising with public bodies regarding the department's projects.
  • Other tasks as per the job description and as assigned by the head of department.

Educational and competency requirements:

  • University education (B.A/B.S) which is relevant to the role.
  • Further education applicable to the job, e.g. in operations or management.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of the areas of responsibility.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in management and budgeting.
  • Proven experience in management and personnel management
  • Knowledge and experience of public administration, policy-making and negotiation.
  • Leadership skills and excellent teamwork and communication skills
  • Vision, ambition, initiative and organisational skills
  • Excellent spoken and written skills in Icelandic and English.
