Reading is the game of life – an encouragement for parents and guardians

The lecture – Let's Turn This Around – will be re-shown on the City of Hafnarfjörður's social media channels this week. The lecture was recorded during a live stream in October 2022, and anyone interested can watch the recording at their convenience. Language skills are important for all learning.

Staff from the Education and Public Health Department of the City of Hafnarfjörður, The project is supported by the Education and Public Health Department of Hafnarfjörður Municipality, the Library of Hafnarfjörður and the Hafnarfjörður Health Centre. The aim of the educational lecture, which is intended for parents of young children, is to raise parents' awareness of the importance of language development for all learning. In recent years, there has been much discussion that the language development and vocabulary of Icelandic children is deteriorating, and that this later affects children's reading comprehension and academic prospects. Numerous studies have shown that with the right stimulation of language development, it is possible to strengthen the foundational elements of literacy and support good academic achievement and well-being. Parents can play an important role in this, and the aim of the lecture is to educate and empower them to strengthen their children's language development by providing practical advice and tools suitable for young children. The contact for the project and its implementation is Bjartey Sigurðardóttir: bjarteys@hafnarfjordur.is
