Þórdís Eva Steinsdóttir, an athletics athlete from FH, was named Hafnarfjörður's Sportswoman at the Hafnarfjörður Sports Festival, which took place on 27 December. She is aiming for many national team events in the coming years and says it is important to believe in herself and trust her coach.

After a good year of competition, Þórdís says it was a great honour to be chosen as the sportswoman of Hafnarfjörður. „It motivates me a lot for the coming year.“ When asked about her goals for 2020 and any potential changes in the pipeline, Þórdís Eva says her goals will be to improve in her events. „It's exciting to see if I'll achieve my goals now that I have a new coach. Ragnheiður Ólafsdóttir left last year and Trausti Stefánsson took over.“

The siblings encourage each other.

Despite her young age, Þórdís has been at the forefront for quite a long time, including being the Icelandic 800m champion in 2013, at just 13 years old. „My career hasn't always been a continuous upward progression. I injured my foot in the winter of 2017 and spent a while getting back to where I was, but I'm doing well today. I think it's realistic to aim for many national team events in the coming years,“ says a optimistic Þórdís. Athlete Hinrik Snær, Þórdís's twin brother, is also at the top of his game. When asked about their relationship in the sport, Þórdís says it's great to have Hinrik with her at training. „There's absolutely no sibling rivalry, but rather just competition, and we're very good at encouraging each other.“

The athletics stadium made a big difference

The facilities at FH have changed a great deal in recent years. What did that change, and how important is it to have good role models? „Having an athletics stadium is very good. We used to have to drive to Laugardal or train in the handball hall in Krikan. We can do almost everything now that the facilities have changed. It's good to have important role models to look up to, and it's also a great motivation.“ Finally, Þórdís wants to give a message to those who see her as a role model: „Have faith in what you do and trust the coach. It's also always worth being positive in training, otherwise it just doesn't work out very well.“

An interview with the 2019 Hafnarfjörður Sportswoman was published in Hafnfirðingurinn on 8 January 2020.
