The Hafnarfjörður Summer Job Scheme offers the town's teenagers a fun and educational summer job.

Work Experience - Information

Application

All teenagers, aged 14–17, who live in Hafnarfjörður can get a summer job with the Summer School. It offers constructive work and education in a safe environment. Staff get a fun insight into the world of work as well as preparation for the general job market.

The office of the Hafnarfjörður Summer School is at Skólabraut 3. From 12 May, the office is open from 8 am to 4 pm, Monday to Thursday, and from 8 am to 2 pm on Fridays. The office staff can also be reached by telephone. 565 1899 and to the email address vinnuskoli@hafnarfjordur.is.

Applications will begin to be accepted in mid-April.

Key projects

  • Street and neighbourhood cleaning.
  • Planting summer flowers.
  • Bead cleaning.
  • Mowing and trimming.
  • Tyrfing.

Through their work, the staff of the Work School beautify and improve the environment, whilst training in work practices that will serve them in the wider community in the future. For many young people, this is their first experience of paid employment, and it is important that it is a positive one, as a good first impression goes a long way.

Every effort is made to provide a variety of tasks and promote job satisfaction. The groups are spread out across various projects within the town, but care is taken to ensure they are not too far from their homes. A group leader is always with their group, and their role includes, amongst other things, teaching young people the correct techniques for the tasks being carried out at any given time.

The Hafnarfjörður Work School operates under an inclusive education policy, where an effort is made to cater for the diverse needs of its students. Pupils at the Work School can take part in special projects, for example, assisting at sports and play courses or at local institutions.

Staff at the Work School are entitled to both meal and coffee breaks. As the staff do not have any dedicated facilities at their work sites, it is only natural that they are seen sitting down and resting from time to time. To ensure the most effective work upbringing, it is important that communication and conversations with the foreman are conducted in a friendly manner, without compromising on the quality of work.

The Hafnarfjörður Summer School is a completely tobacco-, vape- and drug-free workplace.

Rights and responsibilities in the workplace

Presentations on rights and responsibilities in the workplace will be held for all staff. This will ensure students are better informed about the world of work following their employment with the Work Experience Programme.

Peer education

Every summer, peer educators visit each group of 14, 15 and 16-year-olds. The topic of discussion is environmental education, which is a major part of the work of the Work School. The Work School is one of the few in the country to participate in the 'School on Green Branch' project, where there is a targeted focus on environmental work.

Children with allergies

Every year, teenagers with all sorts of allergies come to the Work Club. The Work Club's policy is that these teenagers must provide a doctor's certificate. A suitable task will then be found for them, taking their allergies into account.
